Selma

The movie Selma was depiction of the events that occurred in Selma, Alabama. This movie takes place during the Civil Rights movement.  The town of Selma, Alabama was chosen by Martin Luther King Jr. due to the devotion of the blacks that lived here, the angry, racism, and disgust that the town lawmen had towards the African American residents. These factors made the Selma a perfect location for their march-- it was their chance to peacefully protest and spread their message.
I enjoyed the movie because of the realistic manner in which it showed the struggles that the people involved with the Civil Rights Movement had to put up with in order to be able to vote. It was also interesting to see the constant struggle between King and Lyndon B. Johnson. It was clear that Johnson wanted to help, but he claimed to have had many bigger issues that took priority over the Civil Rights Movement. It was also interesting to watch how Johnson butted heads with the governor of Alabama

I believe that my background, with a lack of oppression, makes it more difficult to share experiences with the characters in the movie. I grew up in a small town, with a culture that lacked diversity. This caused me to be more of an outsider when it comes to oppression, as I have never seen or experienced it in my day to day life. That being said, a basic knowledge in American history, leads me to the conclusion that all that Martin Luther King Jr. fought for was worthwhile, and accurately portrayed in the film.
